Semester One

Found Materials.

A collection of found materials within central Tāmaki Makaurau. Industrial items with the intention of being repurposed for future ventures. Objects claimed, stemming from the purpose of curating an arrangement, sequence, or collaborative construction, reflecting the notions of industrialism and constructivism. Following the ideas of Duchamp, and acquiring a collection of founded materials of similar nature and style. Materials gathered. Execution underway…

Trolley and curb.

Balance. The relationship between to two separate objects with a certain distribution of weight, allowing one or both ‘said’ objects to remain stable and stagnant. Interest within this impression, how far can ‘said’ objects be pushed. Keeping its fixed form before movement and ultimate deconstruction of the notion [balance] occurs. Inspired from Paul Cullen and his manipulation of balance. The uneasiness of the weight of a trolly on its hind wheels, propped up, remaining steady. Not a particularly strong pull towards the work, although the idea is of strong interest. Anxiety through balance and gravity. Not alluring non the less.

Collaborative piece. Arrangement.

Fixating on arrangement. A collaborative piece, in which a game proceeds. The game does not finish until each member is satisfied with the arrangement of presented objects. An extension of found materials, distinguishing how their relationship cooperates or disassociates from one another, depending on its orientation within the sequence. Joesph Beuys’ “The End of the Twentieth Century” is in mind. Orientation and sequencing of materials. Propped at certain angles, balancing an equal counter force and weight. Fluxus mentality is present within the roots of the work. As its encouragement of collaborative work between artist.

Balance. Order.

Return to stability. A constant uneasiness. Will it fall or will it remain, with the introduction of the chain. It creates cohesiveness between the found materials, which may not have been present. Uniting items from [-36.859280, 174.749690] and [-36.848130, 174.772150], the chain-link is a network for such relationship. Perhaps initial attraction for the piece, through a cohesive collaborative mixture between notions of balance and arrangement. Links from one rock to another through a chain link peaks an absorbing feeling or a future venture.

Pillars. Chain. Pipe. [Säulen, Kette, Rohr]

An undeniable presence. The robust and dense nature of the concrete pipe creates an intimate relationship with the fluid quality of the welded chain. A unique juxtaposition between two separate objects, classified under the notion of industrialism. Couplet of concrete pillars. Similar quality. No beginning nor end to the sculptural piece. A successive circular motion within a linear structure. Alike to two independent wireless points, sending back and forth currents. A sense of balance and steadiness is present through the separate pillars. As the chain pulls each pillar together, a feeling of gravitational attraction centres towards the centred concrete piping. What does it speak on? A comment on industrialism? Constructivism? Balance? Possibly. However the weight of the individual objects feel personal as such. A subconscious creation from the id, leaking from the interior to exterior. Its natural poesus. To suggest such allusive thoughts can be infuriating for the artist, to not understand there body of work, as what it says about themselves. Although acknowledging the fact leaves an open book for outsiders for interpretation. The understanding is for others to look within the artist and make judgement.
